Village Regeneration
The announcement that the smelter would close prompted the community and agencies to work together to secure a future for the people of Kinlochleven.

The KLDT was formed in 1996 following extensive consultation with the community and a broad range of local representatives which included The Highland Council, Lochaber Enterprise, the local enterprise company (LEC); The Highlands of Scotland Tourist Board; Scottish Natural Heritage the Employment Service; Kinlochleven Community Council; the Business Group; the Community Association; the voluntary sector; the Highlands and Islands Fire Brigade; and Lochaber Housing Association were also involved. Representatives from Alcan Smelting and Power UK, and from the Alcan workforce.

The KLDT has already made progress in regenerating the village of Kinlochleven:

  • Creation of serviced land for development
  • Provision of 4 business pavilions
  • Range of environmental improvements and path walks
  • Establishment of 'satellite' contact centre
  • Referbishment of listed buildings for use as potential Outdoor - Activity Centre and Micro-Brewery
  • Transfer of land from Alcan Smelting and Power UK

In the future Kinlochleven is well placed to take advantage of the area's considerable natural and human resources to secure the quality of life and prosperity the community aspires to.
