Kinlochleven
Kinlochleven was originally chosen for the Alcan Smelter because of the strong constant river flow and its ability to generate significant power. The turbine hall built to power the whole village and smelter is still owned by Rio Tinto Alcan and is still working, producing revenue for Alcan. Kinlochleven Community has been conscious of the loss of their own power and there is a strong desire to make use once again of the local generation capacity for their own benefit, and as part of the move towards village sustainability. Kinlochleven Community Trust is keen to seek opportunities for any renewable energy project that would have community ownership or part-ownership. A scheme could bring an increased sense of control along with a regular income stream for economic and community benefits.
