Village Square Regeneration Project

Our Kinlochleven Village Square Regeneration Project will create a central garden feature within the centre of Kinlochleven which is at present derelict land. The aim is to create and develop a Centenary Garden in the centre of Kinlochleven to provide a focal point for community activity and present a better impression for residents and visitors.

This project will have an additional benefit of improving and enhancing local built industrial heritage. Plans include the provision of bench areas, raised herb beds, commemorative wall, tarred pathways, flagpole area, flag stones, wall recesses, community Christmas tree base, trees/shrubs, signage and grass areas. It is hoped that a beautiful Pelton Wheel (formerly housed in the Power House in Kinlochleven) kindly donated by Rio Tinto Alcan can be added at a later date.

This project commenced on 1st September 2009 and is expected to last 12/14 weeks. KCT are extremely pleased to announce that their LEADER Application of £27, 200 was recently approved, along with Awards for All £5000, Scottish Community Foundation £2000, Highland Council £2000, Community Fundraising/Donations £2000,
Co-operative Community Fund £900 and Kinlochleven Community Trust £28,900.

With a few months into the development of our village centre the area is already beginning to look more attractive. The site has been prepared with soil spread, excavation of deep planting areas are progressing. The installation of new lighting cable from distribution box to site has been completed and the concrete/clay liners are installed for the Christmas tree.  The project sign has been erected in recognition of the financial assistance received from the above funders.  We have now taken delivery of fourteen cast iron benches which includes the four wall recess seats.

Progress of the project has been considerably delayed due to the extreme weather experienced this winter.  However the contractors are now working towards a preliminary completion date of June/July 2010.  Much of the large infrastructure has been completed.  This includes the raised herb beds, commemorative wall and excavation of infill of pathways, including kerbs.

From mid April 2010 work will begin on the boundary wall, pathways and the seating will be erected.
